The “Gummy Bear” Breast Implants
The hottest thing in the world of breast augmentation is the high-strength silicone breast implant nicknamed the ‘gummy bear’. The gel implants were recently approved by the FDA in America and are now available to women in various surgeries across America. The implants are reported to offer breast augmentation which is of unparalleled realism and durability.
Advantages of the gummy bear:
The gummy bear earned its unusual nickname from Dr Grant Stevens, a plastic surgeon in California, who named it thus as the silicone implant has minimal chance of leaking. If you cut into the implant it wouldn’t run, rather (like a gummy bear) it would offer resistance and then retain its shape. This means that in the event of a trauma or rupture the implant won’t put the individual at risk unlike other types of implant which have notorious problems with rupturing and leaking.
Moreover, the gummy bears are said to be more natural feeling and looking than any other form of implant. They retain a natural ‘tear-drop’ shape and are soft and squishy, unlike saline implants which can become hard. Surgeons have been searching for years for breast implants which are capable of retaining a tear-drop shape, but have never come across a material as effective as the gummy bear. Generally breast implants revert to a less natural round shape as tissue exert pressure upon them, but the cross-linked silicone particles of the gummy bear prevent this.
Gummy bears are considered to be more comfortable than other implants as they can be shaped precisely to a person’s body type. Scar tissue also seems to build up less with gummy bear implants.
Possible disadvantages?
At the moment gummy bear implants are quite expensive and they’re not available everywhere in the world. Some also think that the firmness of the gummy bear is actually a disadvantage, so an amount of personal taste comes into play when choosing the right breast implants. Larger incisions are also needed to insert the implants, but with less scar tissue overall, this doesn’t necessarily have hugely negative consequences.
Currently the gummy bears aren’t available in the UK but are likely to spread across the globe so watch this space!
