Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are filled with a sterile salt-water solution. This solution is either filled through a valve after the implants have been inserted or they are available prefilled. Saline breast implants are a popular choice as the salt-water solution is natural so if the implant was to rupture, the solution can be absorbed by the body, making them a safer choice. A potential drawback of saline breast implants is that they can sometimes decrease in size over time so the breast size is reduced. Also, saline implants tend to appear and feel less natural than silicone implants.
Silicone Breast Implant
Silicone is a natural element which can vary in firmness which means these implants can be filled with firm silicone jelly or soft fluid silicone. The firmness of silicone means it keeps its shape, even if an implant tears inside the body which means the risk of the silicone entering the body is reduced. A key benefit of silicone implants is that the soft silicone feels natural and is less likely to wrinkle than saline implants.
Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a different type of breast enlargement which is often used after or during a mastectomy. The aim of breast reconstruction is to restore the natural shape of the breast and this can mean using a tissue expander such as silicone to stretch the skin and muscles of the breast. Once the skin is stretched, the surgeon may insert a permanent silicone breast implant.
