Breast augmentation can be the solution required for you to feel happy with your body and regain your confidence. However, breast augmentation is an intrusive surgical procedure and, as with any other type of surgical procedure, there are certain risks and potential problems that could occur.
Before having any cosmetic surgery you need to ensure that you are familiar with the potential risks and problems so you can make an informed decision. Below are some potential complications with breast augmentations.
Unlike saline implants, if a silicone implant breaks then it leaks very slowly and the patient may not even be aware of it as they are unlikely to experience any symptoms. Regular MRI screenings would be the only way to detect a rupture in a silicone implant.
The outer cover or shell of saline implants can sometimes be prone to wrinkling or folding and this can cause a rippling effect which can sometimes be seen on the sides of the breast.
This is one of the most common problems and refers to when the body rejects the implants and scar tissue builds up around the implants and causes discomfort. It can affect one or both breast implants and can cause the implant to rupture. If capsular contraction occurs then the surgeon will try to remove the scar tissue and if this isn’t successful, then the implant will have to be removed.
As with any type of surgery, infection can be a potential problem with breast augmentation. It will generally present itself within the first few weeks and you will feel symptoms such as soreness, swelling and a fever. Most infections can be treated with antibiotics but the implant would need to be removed if the patient didn’t respond to antibiotic treatment.
It’s always advisable to discuss potential breast augmentation problems with your surgeon before considering the operation. There can be problems with breast augmentation, just like any other surgical procedure, so you need to be aware of what these are so you can make an educated decision about your surgery.
