Nose Reshaping -
About the Operation

Many patients feel their nose is not an ideal shape. This is frequently that they have a ‘hump’ on the nose. Others feel their nose is too long, too big or too bulky. Many of these variations in nose shape can be altered by a rhinoplasty.

Procedure in brief

The operation is usually performed from inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty). The exact operation will vary depending on the area to be treated. If the dorsum or bridge of the nose is being treated then the bone and cartilage that is causing the hump is removed. The nose is then fractured to allow the remaining bone to be moved closer together. This results in both removal of the hump and narrowing of the nose. When the tip of the nose is to be treated the cartilages that make up the tip support need to be partly removed or reshaped. This will sometimes be done through the nostril and sometimes by a small cut through the columella (see below) with an open rhinoplasty.

Scars

For most rhinoplasty patients there will be no scars as they are inside the nostril and almost vanish. For patients having an open rhinoplasty the columella incision heals very well and also becomes very difficult to see.

Medicines and smoking

All medical history will be sought before any surgery. Do not take herbal medicines prior to surgery or for 3 days following (arnica etc). Also avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and voltarol-based tablets. It is always better if you do not smoke. If you are a smoker try and stop for five days before and after surgery as it can reduce the chances of complications.
