Skin Resurfacing -
Potential Complications

This is a routine treatment that is a great success for the vast majority of patients. Problems mostly occur if the product is too strong. It is important you understand what potential problems exist with any treatment even if very uncommon.

Pigment problems: Although it is relatively uncommon any resurfacing method can alter the pigment in the skin. This usually results in reduced pigmentation but can result in increased pigmentation. These changes can be mixed. This is partly avoided by the creams used before a peel is performed.

Healing problems: Occurs if the peel is too deep and could result in potential scarring. This is extremely unlikely with the 15-20% peels used.

Redness: Most redness reduces rapidly after a few weeks. Rarely, it can persist longer. Redness is greater with dermabrasion.
