Background to Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin has been used medically without any safety problems for over 30 years. It has been used for cosmetic treatments since 1990 and is now licensed for these purposes. It is derived from a bacteria toxin that can paralyse muscle. The doses for cosmetic use are very small by comparison to the traditional use for strong spastic muscles.

Indications for injections

Wrinkles on the forehead, eyes, frown lines and to a lesser degree mouth and neck can all be improved by injectable wrinkle treatments injections. These wrinkles develop over the years from muscle movements which are often overly strong around the face. The aim of these injections is to relax the muscles and improve the wrinkles. This treatment is very effective at achieving this.

Medicines and smoking

All medical history will be sought before any surgery. Try to avoid herbal medicines prior to injections or for 3 days following (arnica etc). Also avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and voltarol-based tablets as all these can cause bruising.
